May 2025 Bullet Journal Theme

Mexican Talavera Tile with Mixed Medium Blues

By Caley King @caleysjournal

We arrived home from my 40th birthday trip to Mexico on May 1, and it took me a few days to land on a theme for my May Bullet Journal. After spending so much time at the beach and pool, I was tempted to lean into a summery, coastal vibe. But I knew that once the trip glow wore off and I settled back into everyday life, a beach theme might just leave me longing for vacation all over again.

So instead, I started thinking about how I could capture the spirit of the trip without diving headfirst into summer mode. I also considered the color palettes I’ve used so far this year and realized I was due for a blue-based theme. That’s when I kept coming back to the Talavera tiles I saw everywhere in Mexico—they were vibrant, bold, and beautifully imperfect, just like the trip itself.

I wanted to reflect that handmade, rustic feel in my pages, so I went into this month’s design with minimal planning and just let the process unfold. Admittedly, the result ended up being a bit more haphazard than I usually prefer—but it also feels honest and authentic, which I love. And I definitely wasn’t about to start over!

For this look, I used a mix of watercolor, Faber-Castell artist pens, and colored pencils to bring the tiles to life.
